A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place or a time of travel to commemorate great events in salvation history. It is an opportunity to bring our petitions, praise, and thanksgiving to a place blessed in some way by the presence of God or His saints. It is also a symbol of what our lives should always be as Christians on our earthly journey towards heaven.

"I was with [Canterbury Pilgrimages] in Quebec, where they organized a pilgrimage for nearly 500 people. They are a great Catholic family so they understand the meaning of a pilgrimage. ... I thought their coordination of large groups was excellent." -Fr. Jonathan Gaspar

"Thank you for the wonderful 4 days and adventures through DC as we adventured through our faith! Everything was spectacular - the hotel, meals, bus outings, places we saw!!" -Regina Z.

Portugal pilgrimage & why 4 million people can’t be wrong

Portugal is home to one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world: Fatima, the "Capital of Peace" where Mary appeared to the three shepherd children.

Pilgrimage to Fatima—Our Lady & the 3 children

Once a sleepy little town, Fatima now welcomes over 4 million pilgrimages a year to its Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima, the Chapel of Apparitions, the Berlin Wall Monument, and the Hungarian Stations of the Cross. The story goes that Mother Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Our Lady confided "secrets" to the children and urgent pleas to pray for sinners. You can learn more about the events through this article.

Other Catholic sites for pilgrims in Portugal

However Fatima isn't the only reason to go to Portugal: The Eucharistic Miracle of Santarem, Braga's Our Lady of Sameiro Shrine and the chapel of Good Jesus of the Mountain, and the Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Lisbon (St. Anthony's birthplace) all offer powerful experiences to the spiritual traveler! Not to mention the Alcobaça Monastery, which was (and still is) the largest church in the country. Walk through the arches of the ruined Convento do Carmo, once the largest convent in Lisbon!
