Itinerary

Day 1 – Monday, June 22 | Depart for Spain

Your pilgrimage begins as you depart Boston on your overnight flight(s) to Madrid, Spain.

Day 2 – Tuesday, June 23 | Arrival in Madrid

Arrive in Madrid and enjoy your first day in Spain. You can take a panoramic walk through the historic center, visit Catholic landmarks, or simply rest and prepare for the journey ahead. Overnight in Madrid. Welcome dinner included today.

Day 3 – Wednesday, June 24 | Madrid to Sarria

After breakfast, you will board a scenic train to Sarria, the gateway to the final 100+ kilometers of the Camino de Santiago, the minimum distance required to earn the Compostela certificate. In the afternoon, you can explore the medieval streets, visit the 13th-century Iglesia de Santa Mariña, and enjoy leisure time before starting your walk. Overnight in Sarria. Breakfast included dinner on your own.

Day 4 – Thursday, June 25 | Sarria to Portomarín

Your Camino begins with shaded oak groves, quiet country roads, and charming hamlets. Along the way, you will see traditional Galician hórreos (granaries) and can visit the Romanesque church in Barbadelo. Your destination, Portomarín, is a rebuilt town — its historic center was moved stone-by-stone to higher ground when the Belesar Reservoir was created. You can visit the Church of San Nicolás, a fortress-like Romanesque gem. Overnight in Portomarín. Breakfast and dinner included today.

Day 5 – Friday, June 26 | Portomarín to Palas de Rei

You will cross the River Miño, Galicia’s longest river, and climb toward the Serra de Ligonde. Along the way, you can stop in Gonzar, visit the Church of Santa María in Castromaior, and admire the Romanesque carvings in Eirexe – including Daniel among lions and Santiago Peregrino. Overnight in Palas de Rei. Breakfast and dinner included today.

Day 6 – Saturday, June 27 | Palas de Rei to Melide

The path continues gently downhill through Casanova and Leboreiro, where you can see a charming 13thcentury church. Your day ends in Melide, famous for its pulperías serving pulpo a la gallega (Galician octopus), a Camino tradition. Overnight in Melide. Breakfast and dinner included today.

Day 7 – Sunday, June 28 | Melide to Arzúa

Today you can follow a forest track past streams to Boente’s Church of Santiago, continue through the
medieval hamlet of Ribadiso, and arrive in Arzúa — known for its creamy local cheese (queso de Arzúa-Ulloa). You can also visit the churches of Santa María and A Magdalena. Overnight in Arzúa. Breakfast and dinner included today.

Day 8 – Monday, June 29 | Arzúa to O Pedrouzo (Rúa-O Pino)

This shaded section of the Camino passes the Chapel of Santa Irene, with its unique statue of Santiago. You will then arrive in Rúa-O Pino, a quiet stop before the final day. Overnight in Rúa-O Pino. Breakfast and dinner included today.

Day 9 – Tuesday, June 30 | Rúa-O Pino to Santiago de Compostela

Your walk passes Lavacolla, where pilgrims traditionally washed before entering Santiago. From Monte do Gozo (“Mount of Joy”), you will see the cathedral spires for the first time. Entering the UNESCO-listed old town, you can visit the Cathedral of Santiago, the resting place of St. James the Apostle. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela. Breakfast included dinner on your own.

Day 10 – Wednesday, July 1 | Santiago de Compostela

You can attend the Pilgrim’s Mass at noon, possibly seeing the Botafumeiro in action. Take time to explore the Cathedral Museum, stroll the medieval streets, and enjoy Santiago’s vibrant cafés and shops. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela. Breakfast included dinner on your own.

Day 11 – Thursday, July 2 | Santiago to Madrid – Return home

After breakfast, you will take the train back to Madrid and connect with your return flight(s) home, bringing with you not only memories, but the grace and renewal of your pilgrimage

Group Flights

Can I book my own flights?

You are always welcome to arrange your own flights. Arranging airfare on your own gives you the ability to spend personally-earned airline miles for your ticket, handpick your seats, upgrade directly with the airline, or deviate from the group in other ways.

What is group airfare?

We work with airlines on booking group airfare from anticipated departure airports. This allows us to get the best rates to fly you and the rest of the group to and from your destination. Group air contracts do not allow deviations, date changes, or upgrades, and in some cases issuing tickets at individual rates may be necessary. See “Can I upgrade my flights and/or depart earlier/return later than the group?” below.

Select your preferred departure airport during registration. If you don’t see your preferred airport listed, please select “send me a flight quote”.

Can I apply TSA PreCheck or Global Entry?

If you have booked airfare through us and would like to apply your Known Traveler Number (for TSA PreCheck) and/or your CBP PASSID (for Global Entry), you may provide it to us during registration. Forgot your KTN? Retrieve it here: https://tsaenrollmentbyidemia.tsa.dhs.gov/ktn-lookup

Can I use frequent flyer miles or airline vouchers?

We cannot book your airfare using earned frequent flyer miles or airline vouchers. However, if the airfare we book for you coincides with an airline you are a member of, we are happy to apply your frequent flyer # to your booking for any mile accrual (if applicable).

Can I upgrade my flights and/or depart earlier/return later than the group?

Absolutely. If you would like to arrive earlier/depart later than the group and/or upgrade your airfare, please contact us at hello@canterburypilgrimages.com

When will I receive my flight schedule?

The group’s flight schedules will be provided to you digitally and in the mail 30 days before the pilgrimage.
