Main Pilgrimage Itinerary from July 11-17, 2027

Day 1: Sunday, July 11, 2027: Arrival in Kauai

Our pilgrimage begins as we make our way from across the United States to the island of Kauai, Hawaii’s oldest and northernmost island, known as the Garden Isle for its lush, unspoiled landscapes and dramatic natural beauty. Upon arrival, we check in to our oceanfront resort at the Sheraton Poipu. This evening we gather on the beach lawn for a welcome reception with Chris and Natalie Stefanick, enjoying appetizers and drinks as the sun sets over the Pacific. It is the perfect beginning to our time together on this remarkable island. (Appetizers included)

Check-in guaranteed at 4:00PM, welcome reception begins at 7:00PM

Day 2: Monday, July 12, 2027: Kalalau Lookout, Waimea Canyon, Spouting Horn Park & Luau

We open the day with Mass on the beach lawn, followed by a group breakfast at the resort. Our Mercedes Sprinter vans then take us to two of Kauai’s most breathtaking natural landmarks. At the Kalalau Lookout, we gaze out over the vast Kalalau Valley and the Pacific beyond, a view often framed by rainbows arching across the ridgelines. We continue to Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, where layers of deep red cliffs, green valleys, and cascading waterfalls stretch across miles of untouched terrain. We then make our way to Spouting Horn Park before sitting down together for a group lunch at RumFire. The afternoon is free to enjoy the resort and its surroundings at your own pace. In the evening, we attend the Aulii Luau, an authentic Hawaiian celebration featuring traditional food, music, and the Rhythm of Aloha show. (B/L/D)

Day 3: Tuesday, July 13, 2027: Hanalei & the North Shore

Following Mass and group breakfast at the resort, we make our way up to Hanalei, one of Kauai’s most beautiful and storied coastal towns, set beneath dramatic green peaks along the island’s north shore. The morning is spent on the water, with options to kayak or paddleboard on the Hanalei River, paddling beneath the historic Hanalei Bridge and into the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge, where native birds and lush tropical foliage line the banks, or heading out toward Hanalei Bay, where sea turtles are a common sight along the golden sand shoreline. Lunch is on your own, with a variety of local cafes nearby. We rejoin as a group in the late afternoon for the return journey to the resort, where we gather for dinner and an evening session with Chris Stefanick, Josh Kapika, and Dallas Carter. Dinner and overnight at Sheraton Poipu. (B/D)

Day 4: Wednesday, July 14, 2027: Allerton Garden, Ziplining & Mountain Tubing

After Mass and breakfast at the resort, we make our way to the National Tropical Botanical Garden for a guided Best of Both Worlds tour of the McBryde and Allerton Gardens, two of the most extraordinary botanical collections in the United States. Set along the Lawa’i Valley, the Allerton Garden was developed over decades by the Allerton family and features a series of garden rooms, rare tropical plantings, and Moreton Bay fig trees made famous by the film Jurassic Park. We return to the resort for a group lunch before heading out for our afternoon adventure. Guests choose between a thrilling zipline experience or mountain tubing through the historic irrigation tunnels of Kauai’s former sugar plantation highlands. We return to the resort for dinner and an evening group session. Dinner and overnight at Sheraton Poipu. (B/L/D)

Day 5: Thursday, July 15, 2027: Helicopter Tour & Day at Leisure

We begin the morning with Mass and breakfast at the resort. Today offers one of the most extraordinary optional experiences of the pilgrimage: a doors-off helicopter tour over Kauai. Soaring above lush rainforests, hidden waterfalls, Waimea Canyon, and the dramatic Na Pali Coast, this flight offers a perspective on God’s creation that few ever witness. Those who prefer a quieter day may enjoy the resort, the beach, or optional surf lessons at Kauai Surf School, located steps from the Sheraton Poipu. Lunch is on your own today. We close the evening together with dinner at the resort, followed by Adoration. Dinner and overnight at Sheraton Poipu. (B/D)

Day 6: Friday, July 16, 2027: Na Pali Coast Catamaran & Kauai Coffee Estate

We depart early this morning for Port Allen Marina to board our catamaran with Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures. A light continental breakfast is served onboard as we set out along the Na Pali Coast, one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the world, with towering sea cliffs, hidden sea caves, and cascading waterfalls accessible only by water. The morning includes time for snorkeling in the warm Pacific waters, and a BBQ lunch is served onboard before we return to shore in the early afternoon. On our way back to the resort, we make a stop at the Kauai Coffee Estate, home to the largest coffee farm in the United States, for a brief visit and a chance to sample the island’s own harvest. Back at the resort, we gather for Mass, followed by a group dinner and time for shared reflections to close the day. Dinner and overnight at Sheraton Poipu. (B/L/D)

Day 7: Saturday, July 17, 2027: Farewell & Departure

We gather one final time for breakfast together at the resort before saying our farewells and departing for Lihue Airport. We carry home with us the beauty of these islands, the grace of the sacraments celebrated together, and the friendships deepened along the way. (B)

Optional: 3-night extension from July 17-20, 2027

Those who wish to linger a little longer are warmly invited to join us for three additional nights at the Sheraton Poipu. The extension is open to all pilgrims and offers a slower, more relaxed pace after the main program concludes. Spend your days exploring the island at your own leisure, returning to favorite spots, or simply resting on the beach. Daily Mass continues each morning, and Chris Stefanick will offer evening reflections on select nights.

For those selected for the optional Kalaupapa Saints Day Trip, one of these days will include an extraordinary excursion to the island of Molokai. Space on the Kalaupapa tour is limited to 24 participants, with 8 departing on each of the three extension days. Participants will be randomly assigned to a departure day. Those not visiting Kalaupapa on a given day will enjoy that day fully at leisure.

Day 1: Saturday, July 17, 2027: Extension Begins

The extension begins with Mass this morning and the first of three unhurried days on the island. The day is yours to enjoy as you please. Those assigned to today’s Kalaupapa departure will head out early for Molokai (see Kalaupapa Day Trip description below). Chris will offer an evening reflection for the group. Dinner this evening is on your own.

Day 2: Sunday, July 18, 2027: At Leisure

Another day to rest, explore, or simply take in the beauty of Kauai at your own pace. Mass is celebrated this morning. Those assigned to today’s Kalaupapa departure will head out early for Molokai (see Kalaupapa Day Trip description below). Chris will gather the group for an evening reflection. Dinner this evening is on your own.

Day 3: Monday, July 19, 2027: At Leisure

Our final full day on the island. Whether you spend it on the beach, out exploring, or quietly enjoying the resort, savor these last hours in Kauai. Mass is celebrated this morning. Those assigned to today’s Kalaupapa departure will head out early for Molokai (see Kalaupapa Day Trip description below). Chris will gather the group this evening for a final reflection together. Dinner this evening is on your own.

Day 4: Tuesday, July 20, 2027: Farewell & Departure

We gather for a final breakfast at the resort before checking out and making our way to Lihue Airport. We carry home the gifts of these extra days, the quiet grace of Kauai, and the friendships and faith deepened along the way. (B)

Optional: Kalaupapa Saints Day Trip

Limited to 24 participants (first come first serve), randomly assigned across three departure days

You must register for the optional 3-night extension to be eligible for the Kalaupapa Saints Day Trip

Visiting Kalaupapa is not easy, and that is precisely what makes it so rare. The Kalaupapa peninsula on the island of Molokai sits at the base of some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, accessible only by small aircraft, mule trail, or sea. Access to the peninsula is governed jointly by the National Park Service and the Hawaii State Department of Health, which strictly limits the number of visitors permitted each day to protect the small community of remaining residents. Public tours were suspended entirely for five years during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and only resumed in late 2025. Even today, tours are limited to a maximum of 30 visitors per day, and most of the public has no way of securing a spot. This is not a destination you can simply book on your own.

For the 24 pilgrims joining us on this excursion, the visit carries a significance that goes well beyond its difficulty. The Kalaupapa peninsula on the island of Molokai is one of the most sacred Catholic pilgrimage sites in the United States. From 1866 until 1969, this remote, cliff-bound settlement served as a government-mandated isolation colony for those diagnosed with leprosy, known today as Hansen’s disease. Into this place of suffering came St. Damien de Veuster, the Belgian priest who arrived in 1873 and gave his life in service to the patients there, dying of the disease himself in 1889. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. St. Marianne Cope, a Franciscan sister from New York, arrived in 1888 and continued his work for more than three decades, caring for the most vulnerable with extraordinary compassion and joy. She was canonized in 2012. Together, their witness transformed Kalaupapa into a place of hope and holiness that still speaks powerfully to all who visit.

A box breakfast will be provided on the day of your visit. The day follows the schedule below.

4:00 AM – Motorcoach pickup at Sheraton Poipu
4:30 AM – Arrive Lihue Airport (LIH)
6:00 AM – Depart LIH on Alaska Airlines flight 1004
6:36 AM – Arrive Honolulu (HNL)
8:45 AM – Depart HNL on Mokulele Airlines
9:34 AM – Arrive Kalaupapa Airport

Upon arrival, we receive a welcome and safety briefing before setting out on a guided tour of the peninsula.

Morning, Kalaupapa Side: The tour takes in the Kalaupapa Lighthouse and Peninsula, Ocean View Pavilion, Papaloa Cemetery, historic patient homes and community churches, the Visitors’ Quarters, and the historic pier.

Midday, Kalawao Side: We visit Paschoal Hall, Staff Row, Siloam Church, St. Philomena Church, the graves of Father Damien and Brother Dutton, the Baldwin Home for Boys, and the ruins of the Leprosy Investigation Station. Views across the Kalaupapa Crater and Waihanau Valley offer a striking sense of the peninsula’s dramatic geography and isolation.

Lunch is enjoyed at Judd Park. Please bring your own lunch, as no food is available for purchase on the peninsula.

Afternoon, Legacy Sites: The tour continues to the Kalaupapa Bookstore, Mother Marianne’s gravesite and memorial, the Bishop Home Complex, St. Francis Church, and Historic Damien Hall.

4:00 PM – Return to Kalaupapa Airport
4:54 PM – Depart Kalaupapa on Mokulele Airlines
5:37 PM – Arrive HNL
7:31 PM – Depart HNL on Alaska Airlines flight 1163

Can I book my own flights?

You are always welcome to arrange your own flights. Arranging airfare on your own gives you the ability to spend personally-earned airline miles for your ticket, handpick your seats, upgrade directly with the airline, or deviate from the group in other ways.

If you choose to book your own flights, please see the following guidelines in regard to timing your flights:

Pilgrimage Arrival – For the arrival into Lihue on the 11th, a group transfers will be available between 10am – 4pm. If you arrive prior to this, you are welcome to wait and join this motor coach transfer to the hotel. Please let us know if you intend to join these transfers. Hotel check-in is guaranteed at 4pm and a welcome reception will follow at 7pm.

For those whose flights land after this transfer departs from the airport, we are happy to arrange a private transfer for you. Private transfers cost $150 (2 passengers).  Otherwise, there are numerous Taxi and Uber options available, and you are welcome to simply meet the group at the hotel.

Pilgrimage Departure – Please schedule your departure flight from Lihue Airport for 8am or later on the 17th (or 20th for the extension). A complimentary transfer will be provided that day, arriving at the airport in time for flights departing at or after 11:00 AM.

If your flight departs before 11:00 AM, you will need to arrange a private transfer. For this reason, we strongly recommend booking a flight departing at 11:00 AM or later.

How does airport transportation work on arrival and departure?

Arrival: If you choose to book airfare with us, you will be greeted in the destination airport’s arrival hall by a Canterbury Pilgrimages representative and transferred to the first stop on the itinerary, typically your hotel.

Departure: If you choose to book airfare with us, you will be transferred from the last stop on your itinerary, typically your hotel, to the airport for your return flight home.

If you book your own flights: You may book arrival and departure transfers through us for an additional cost. You may also choose to arrange your own means of transportation to and from the airport. In most cases, on arrival, the first stop on the itinerary will be the group’s hotel, but we will provide you with the location if the group is meeting elsewhere on this day.

Can I apply TSA PreCheck or Global Entry?

If you have booked airfare through us and would like to apply your Known Traveler Number (for TSA PreCheck) and/or your CBP PASSID (for Global Entry), you may provide it to us during registration. Forgot your KTN? Retrieve it here: https://tsaenrollmentbyidemia.tsa.dhs.gov/ktn-lookup

Can I use frequent flyer miles or airline vouchers?

We cannot book your airfare using earned frequent flyer miles or airline vouchers. However, if the airfare we book for you coincides with an airline you are a member of, we are happy to apply your frequent flyer # to your booking for any mile accrual (if applicable).

Can I upgrade my flights and/or depart earlier/return later than the group?

Absolutely. If you would like to arrive earlier/depart later than the group and/or upgrade your airfare, please contact us at hello@canterburypilgrimages.com

When will I receive my flight schedule?

The group’s flight schedules will be provided to you digitally and in the mail 30 days before the pilgrimage.

Know Before You Book

What is a pilgrimage?

What is a pilgrimage?

We would like to remind you that a pilgrimage is not a vacation or excursion but rather a unique spiritual journey that will provide many opportunities to deepen your relationship with God and enrich your Catholic faith by bringing Scripture to life. Millions throughout the ages have gone before you searching for a way to physically connect with their faith in Christ Jesus. You may find that when you are near a saint’s tomb, viewing a holy relic, or praying a Marian devotion, you are overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit in a very real sense. Pilgrimages offer the opportunity to let Christ draw you near. Your chaplain is there to help guide you spiritually on this journey.

Walking expectations

This active program covers a good amount of ground each day. The days are busy, usually starting with a wake-up call around 7AM and departure by 9AM or earlier. We aim to be back at the hotel between 5PM and 6PM. Times may vary depending on destination and program. We encourage all pilgrims to be able to walk 3-4 miles per day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps, cobblestones, and significant slopes. Some tours require walking in the open air with no shade and no seating available. For more specifics on this itinerary’s physical landscape, please reach out to us.

Pilgrimage Timeline with Canterbury

Today! Registration

Upon depositing for your trip, we would like to get to know a little bit about you. We will collect your basic contact information, passport information, emergency contact information, and how you would like to set up your pilgrimage. How many are in your party? Will you travel with them and/or share a room with them? Do you know anyone else attending? Where are you flying from?

After Registration

You will receive additional information that will help you start preparing for your pilgrimage. If applicable, we will also begin working on your flight and travel requests.

90 days – Payment deadline

Full payment is due for your trip 90 days prior to your departure. This also serves as the last day to sign up for the pilgrimage if space is still available. Once within the 90-day deadline, we may be able to accommodate you at a different rate.

30 days – Pilgrim travel kit mailed

Your pilgrim travel kit includes an invite to download our travel app. On the app is where you will find your flight itinerary (if you opt for us to book your flights), trip itinerary, and a map of your hotel accommodations. You will also have the ability to share photos and messages with fellow pilgrims, and receive any important flight and schedule updates before and during your pilgrimage. Also included in the pilgrim travel kit is your name badge, a luggage tag, a Magnificat prayer book, and a copy of the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, which inspired our mission.

Your pilgrim travel kit will either be delivered to your mailing address provided, or to your parish if a pre-departure meeting is arranged. Please note, we ship via FedEx 2-day air, and thus cannot deliver to P.O. boxes.

Departure Day

The day has arrived! We are looking forward to meeting you.

Upon Return

After the pilgrimage experience, we would love to hear from you what went well and what we can improve upon. We kindly ask you to respond to the survey in your inbox within 5 days of return while your new memories are still fresh.

Time to book your next pilgrimage!

Hotel Accommodations

Single Rooms

Solo travelers are always welcome on our pilgrimages. If you wish to have a hotel accommodation to yourself, you will be responsible for the single room fee (commonly referred to as a single supplement.)

Shared Rooms

Sharing hotel accommodations is a great way to save money and get to know another solo traveler on the pilgrimage. If you wish to share a room, we will attempt to connect you with another person of the same gender on the pilgrimage looking to share. Shared rooms are always double rooms with 2 beds. Should we not be able to accommodate you with a roommate, you will be responsible for the single room fee.

Double Rooms

For pilgrims traveling with a companion, double rooms are available in either 1 or 2 bed configurations.

Triple & Quad Rooms

For pilgrims traveling in parties of 3 or 4, please be aware that while we do our best to accommodate, not all hotels have rooms equipped with 3 or 4 beds. In many cases, the 3rd or 4th bed is a cot or convertible sofa bed.

Bed Sizes

Europe: 1 queen bed or 2 twin beds

Asia: 1 twin bed or 2 twin beds

USA: 1 king bed or 2 queen beds

Passports & Visas

Passports

  • A valid passport is required to travel outside of the United States.
  • Your passport must be valid 6 months from the trip return date.
  • If your passport will be expiring within the 6 month window, it is important to renew your passport in a timely manner as renewal turnarounds can take several weeks to months.
  • Passport cards are NOT acceptable for travel internationally; only passport books.
  • We will need your passport information at least 90 days prior to departure. You may provide us with your passport information upon registering if it is valid and up to date.
  • All airlines and hotels require us to submit your passport information including full name, date of birth, gender, country, and passport expiration date.

Although we will do our best to notify you if your passport will not be valid for travel, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure your passport is valid.

Travel Visas

Depending on the nationality of your passport, a travel visa may be required to reach your destination. Although we will do our best to notify you if a travel visa is required, it is ultimately your responsibility to check if visas are required for the destinations visited and to obtain any necessary travel documents. You can do that easily here: https://apply.joinsherpa.com/travel-restrictions

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance

  • We strongly encourage travel insurance for all of our pilgrims. We partner with Allianz Travel Insurance to offer affordable travel insurance.
  • Most of our pilgrims choose the Classic Plan to protect their travel investment. Learn more about this plan by clicking here.
  • Insurance can be quoted and purchased after registration. With any questions, or if you would like to include insurance for airfare or accommodations that you did not purchase through Canterbury, please contact us for assistance.
  • By purchasing a policy through us, please note that the service we provide is only in the acquisition and management of your policy. In the case of postponement or cancellation of your pilgrimage, we will request the necessary updates to your policy to reflect your new dates of travel, or request the cancellation and refund of your insurance policy if applicable (refunds are subject to Allianz’s discretion). Any claims filed are the responsibility of the customer.
Accessibility

In the air

Although group airfare is restrictive with seat selection, we will always do what we can to accommodate pilgrims who need specific seating, such as aisle or bulkhead seating, due to a medical condition or disability. In addition to that, wheelchair assistance from the moment you arrive at the airport, to your terminal, or all the way to your seat, is available to you, provided by the airline, and does not need to be pre-arranged.

On the ground

Most countries do not follow US accessibility standards. Old buildings, cobblestone walkways, and uneven surfaces are a part of every itinerary. Access to some establishments may not be convenient for wheelchair use and will require the use of stairs. During hotel overnights, we can arrange for you to stay in handicap-accessible rooms where available. In the event they are not available, we will request rooms on the main floor or near an elevator.

Can I request a wheelchair?

Pending availability, we are happy to request a wheelchair rental for the duration of the pilgrimage. Wheelchair users must have a designated travel companion to assist them during the pilgrimage. Please reach out to us to place this request.

Postponements & Cancellations

Postponement

We always intend to provide our customers with the pilgrimage they spend time and resources to plan with us. If we are unable to travel to a destination ahead of a trip, or reasonably predict to be unable to travel, Canterbury reserves the right to make changes to the itinerary, including the dates of the trip. We respect your time and that of the people in your life who plan for your absence. We only change or postpone the dates of the trip when it is necessary due to inability to travel to a destination, untimely closures in crucial sites along the itinerary, extreme weather conditions, government mandates, war, acts of God, or other factors. In this situation, your reservation will be automatically preserved for the new dates of the trip, which will take place at a reasonable time arranged by Canterbury and/or the group organizer. Additionally, Canterbury hopes to offer you the best possible options for your reservation given the circumstances, which, if possible, could include transferring your reservation to another trip, or other arrangements.

Cancellation

Countless months get put into the organization of your trip, thus we do our best to avoid cancelling it. Though we reserve the right to cancel for any reason at any time, we typically only do in instances of an insufficient group size. In this case, we would refund 100% of what you have paid to us back to your original payment method on file within 10 business days.
