October 31 Our pilgrimage to Italy begins as we depart our local airport for and an overnight flight to Rome, Italy.

November 1 Upon arrival in Rome, we’ll have an orientation tour of the Eternal City which will familiarize us with Rome which will be our home for the next week. Following hotel check-in, there will be time for relaxation before we gather for welcome Mass and dinner. Overnight Rome

November 2 Today we visit the basilicas of St. John Lateran including the Holy Stairs, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major, where a reliquary containing part of the Holy Crib of Bethlehem rests. We will cap the day with a visit to the Collegio San Norberto. Overnight Rome

November 3 Following breakfast, we’ll make take an excursion to visit the quaint hilltop birthplace of St. Francis, which still retains something of the atmosphere of the early 1200s when St. Francis began his ministry. Before proceeding to the Church of St. Clare, we break for lunch at one of the trattorias in Assisi. St. Clare was the foundress of the Order of Poor Clare’s. Her body lies entombed there, barely corrupt since her death centuries ago. We proceed back down to the Basilica of St. Francis, to view some of his earthly possessions and the many frescoes depicting his life. While in the basilica, we’ll have the opportunity to celebrate Mass. Back to Rome. Overnight Rome

November 4 Today Ancient Rome will be explored beginning with Mass at the Church of Santa Maria Ara Coeli (a Church on the Capitoline Hill which commemorates a vision of Augustus Caesar of the Virgin Mary). Next, we will visit the Mamertine Prison where St. Peter and St. Paul were imprisoned for 9 months. We also see the remnants of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. Overnight Rome

November 5 We depart Rome for a full day excursion to Naples and Pompeii. Enroute along the highway you will be able to see the Abbey of Montecassino, noted for its famous battle and complete destruction during World War II. Arriving in Naples we will proceed towards the hill of Posillipo from where we can enjoy a spectacular view over the Gulf of Naples and the volcano Vesuvio. Descending, we arrive in the ancient fishing quarter of Santa Lucia and see the impressive Castel Dell’Ovo. Our city tour continues to the Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francesco Di Paola. Next, depart Naples for Pompeii where we visit the excavations on foot with a local guide on an archaeological journey through the ancient city.  We return to Rome for dinner and relaxation. Overnight Rome

November 6 We will spend today in the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and the smallest country in the world, the Vatican. Pope Francis will greet us (and thousands of fellow pilgrims from around the world) in St. Peter’s Square, followed by teachings, readings, and a Papal blessing (subject to Pope Francis’ schedule). We will continue our time in the Vatican with a tour of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum, and the Sistine Chapel, all built on the site where Saint Peter, the chief apostle, died a martyr and was buried in 64 AD. Overnight Rome

November 7 This morning we begin with Mass at the Tomb of St. Peter. After Mass, we enjoy a tour of the Scavi, the excavations beneath the Basilica of St. Peter (subject to final confirmation by the Vatican 48 hours prior to the tour). Next, we visit the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and the Piazza Navona Afternoon at leisure.  Overnight Rome
