Pilgrimage Overview


Day 1:  Flight to Milan, Italy

Our pilgrimage in the footsteps of the great saints of Italy begins as we depart from our local airport for an overnight flight to Milan, Italy.  (itinerary continued below)


Day 2

Upon arrival in Milan, we’ll be greeted by our Canterbury tour manager. If time allows, we’ll enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city. We’ll check into our hotel and enjoy our welcome dinner.

Day 3

Our morning in Milan will begin with a visit to the Duomo, Milan’s magnificent basilica. Our spiritual director will celebrate Mass at Saint Charles Borromeo’s tomb. Saint Borromeo was the Roman Catholic archbishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584, and a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation combat against the Protestant Reformation. We will also view the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting of the “Last Supper” in the Dominican refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Created in 1498 and measuring nearly 30 feet long, this work of art depicts Jesus and his disciples at the first celebration of the Eucharist. This afternoon, we’ll make a visit to pray at the Shrine of Saint Gianna Molla in Mesero. Canonized in May of 2004, Saint Gianna was a pediatrician who, with medical complications during pregnancy, refused abortion and sacrificed her own life to save the child she carried.

Day 4

After breakfast, we’re off to Padua, where Saint Anthony, the great Franciscan preacher and patron saint of lost articles, is venerated. Padua is known for the frescoes by Giotto in its Scrovegni Chapel and the vast 13th-century Basilica of Saint Anthony. The basilica, with its Byzantine-style domes and notable artworks, contains Saint Anthony’s tomb. Mass will be celebrated. Following Mass, we’ll enjoy a sightseeing tour of Padua We’ll have time this afternoon to enjoy Padua's old town, lined with arcaded streets and stylish cafes.

Day 5

We’ll continue south this morning, reaching the hilltop village of Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi, and a UNESCO world heritage site known for its magnificent medieval architecture. Saint Francis abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after hearing the voice of God, who asked him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. Still today, Assisi bears testimony to the iconic saint’s lifestyle. We’ll have the opportunity to visit and pray at the Basilica of Saint Francis, the Convent of Saint Clare, and the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels with the Portiuncula Chapel.

Day 6

This morning, we depart east for our journey along the Adriatic Sea, making our first stop in Loreto to visit the Holy House of Loreto. Since medieval times, the Holy House has been believed to be the very home in which the Virgin Mary lived, conceived, and raised Jesus. We’ll continue along the coast to Lanciano, home of the first Eucharistic Miracle, dating back to the eighth century. Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Eucharistic Miracle, followed by our drive to San Giovanni Rotondo.

Day 7

We begin the day in San Giovanni Rotondo with the celebration of Mass in the church of Santa Maria della Grazie, followed by a visit in the convent and museum of St. Padre Pio. We’ll have the opportunity for prayer amidst the tomb of St. Padre Pio, a priest and friar in the Capuchin order who received the stigmata, Christ-like wounds, while praying in September of 1918. They remained with him for the remainder of his life.

Day 8

We’ll depart for the Eternal City of Rome this morning, stopping in Monte Cassino to visit the Abbey of Monte Cassino, founded by St. Benedict in 529 AD. Upon arrival in Rome, we’ll enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour, visiting the Piazza Venezia, the Circus Maximus, and the Imperial Forums.

Day 9

After breakfast, we’re off to St. Peter’s Square for the celebration of Mass with the Holy Father. (subject to the Pope’s schedule). Following a lunch break, we’ll tour the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica.

Day 10

Following breakfast, we will visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the Church of St. Mary Major, as well as the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran where we’ll have an opportunity to climb the Lateran Steps. We’ll enjoy an afternoon at leisure to experience all that Rome has to offer.

Day 11

After breakfast, we’ll begin our last day in the Eternal City with a visit to the Arch of Constantine, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. We’ll continue our sightseeing tour this afternoon with a visit to the Piazza Navona, the Church of Saint Ines, and the Pantheon, which boasts the largest dome of its kind in the world. We end our day with a visit to the Trevi Fountain, followed by our farewell dinner.

Day 12

With a renewed sense of pilgrimage, and an invigorated love of our Catholic faith, we’ll board our plane for the return flight home.
