Father Jim Heyd

Ordained a priest in 1989, Fr. James F. Heyd is a member of the Archdiocese of Chicago.  He considers the presence of Serra International in Chicago to be a blessing.  A 1985 graduate of Notre Dame with a major in history has prepared Fr. Jim well to appreciate the life, legacy and meaning of the newly-canonized Fray Junipero Serra and the California missions. Fr. Jim played a role in the Tricentenary of the birth of St. Serra (1713-2013) and has participated in Serra Conventions over the last decade.  Fr. Jim has traveled throughout Mallorca, Mexico, and California to learn and understand Fray Junipero Serra.  Fr. Jim sees him as one of the pivotal mission disciples of the evangelization of the Americas, a staunch defender of human dignity, and a learned and saintly man.  At present, Fr. Jim is studying the role of pilgrimage in the spiritual and cultural development of Western Civilization.

Sunday, January 20

Following the Serra National Rally this afternoon, our pilgrimage begins as our motorcoach driver(s) meet and greet us at the Ventura Beach Marriott. Our journey north leads us to our first visit, the Mission Santa Barbara, known as the “Queen of the Missions.” We will have a rare glimpse into the Mission Archive-Library, hosted by the Franciscans of the Old Mission Santa Barbara. We’ll enjoy the lovely city of Santa Barbara and afterwards, proceed to the unique city of Solvang, where the old world charm of Northern Europe meets the blue skies of Southern California. We’ll enjoy a drive-by photo opportunity of the Mission Santa Ines before checking into our hotel.

Overnight Solvang  (Dinner included today)

After breakfast, we’re off to visit and participate in Mass at the Mission San Carlos Borroméo del río Carmelo, where St. Junípero Serra is entombed beneath the sanctuary of this mission church. We’ll view his sarcophagus as well as that of three of his fellow missionaries. We'll continue north, making our way along the beautiful 17-Mile Drive which takes us through coastline and the Pebble Beach Resort. Our last mission visit today will be at the Mission of San José, an active participant in the Parish of St. Joseph.

Wednesday, January 23

Following breakfast, we proceed to visit and participate in Mass at the Mission San Francisco de Asís, home to the “National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.” Our visit will continue across the Golden Gate Bridge into the famed Sonoma Wine Region and Marin County area, where we'll find the last of the originally established California Missions: the Mission San Francisco Solano, nestled in the wine country 40 miles north of San Francisco and across from the site of the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846. If time allows, we will have the opportunity to visit a Napa Valley winery. We’ll gather for our Farewell Dinner this evening.
