Itinerary

Day 1Monday, June 5

Our pilgrimage begins as we depart the U.S. for our overnight flight to Spain. (flight not included)

Day 2Tuesday, June 6

We arrive this morning at the Barcelona Airport where we meet our tour director. We spend the day in Barcelona, where we have a guided tour of this beautiful city, including a visit to Antoni Gaudí’s breathtaking Sagrada Família.

Day 3Wednesday, June 7

Following breakfast, we travel to the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat. Here ,we visit the basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat. Following our visit we continue to Zaragoza where we see the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar and its connection with St. James.

Day 4Thursday, June 8

We depart Zaragoza this morning and make our way to Burgos. We attend Mass in the Carmelite Convent of San Jose and Santa Ana, home to various relics of St. Teresa. We then visit the Church of San Gil, where St. Teresa heard Mass in the Chapel of La Buena Mañana accompanied by her sisters. Afterwards, there is time to explore and pray in the Cathedral. Burgos’ medieval past can be observed in its walled enclosures.

Day 5Friday, June 9

After breakfast this morning, we depart for Santiago de Compostela. En route, we visit León, stopping at the Gothic cathedral on the Plaza de Regla, as well as the Basilica of St. Isidore.

Day 6Saturday, June 10

Today we have an opportunity to walk a portion of the “Way of St. James,” followed by a guided tour of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Day 7Sunday, June 11

We arrive in Ávila today, the City of Kings and of Saints, completely encircled by 11th century walls. This is the birthplace of St. Teresa, one of the greatest mystics, and the patron of the Avila Institute. We visit the Museum of and celebrate Mass at the Convent of La Encarnación where St. Teresa entered religious life. In the museum, we see various relics and the stairs were Teresa had an encounter with the Child Jesus.

Day 8Monday, June 12

We continue our visit of Ávila today. The walled city of Ávila is the home of St. Teresa, one of four female Doctors of the Church. We visit the Cathedral, which contains many of St. Teresa’s relics, the crypt of the Convento of La Santa, built on the site of the house where she was born and home to the most comprehensive museum dedicated to her life, and the Convent of San Jose, the first convent that she founded. We also visit Los Cuatro Postes, where tradition says little Teresa and her brother Rodrigo were stopped by their uncle as they were heading to martyrdom. This spot provides a spectacular view of the city walls.

Day 9Tuesday, June 13

Today we visit Segovia for a tour of the medieval city and its ancient Roman Aqueducts. We will visit the Convent of the St. John of the Cross and celebrate Mass where he is buried. We will then walk the same route John of the Cross took into town – “ascending mount Carmel” – going by the nun’s convent to visit the Gothic Cathedral of St Mary and its chapel in honor of St. Teresa’s “half friar.”

Day 10Wednesday, June 14

This morning we visit the sight of the first foundation for the friars in Duruelo, where important events that impacted the spiritual mission of Saint John of the Cross took place. We continue to the city of Alba de Tormes to venerate the relics of St. Teresa of Ávila in the church of the Carmelite Convent where she died and her miraculously pierced heart rests in a glass reliquary. We then go across the square to visit the first Church dedicated in honor of St. John of the Cross and the museum of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers.

Day 11Thursday, June 15

We depart in the morning for Arenas de San Pedro where we visit the Shrine of St. Peter of Alcántara, friend and supporter of St. Teresa’s reform. We continue to Toledo, one of Spain’s most ancient and charming cities and Teresa’s paternal ancestral home. Here we visit the Carmelite Convent where we venerate the incorrupt body of Blessed Mary of Jesus. After Mass, we head over to the 13th century Gothic Primate Cathedral of St. Mary, and the Chapel of St Joseph, which housed St. Teresa’s community from 1570-1583.

Day 12Friday, June 16

With a renewed sense of pilgrimage and an invigorated love for our Catholic faith, we board our flight for the return journey home. (flight not included)
