Arrival in Mexico City

Our pilgrimage begins in the city Our Lady of Guadalupe chose for herself. Her apparition on Tepeyac in 1531 brought some nine million into the Church within a decade, the largest conversion it has ever known. If you booked your flights through us, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall; if you made your own arrangements, meet the group at the hotel. We gather this evening for our welcome dinner.

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Today is devoted to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. On the way, we stop at the Plaza of the Three Cultures in Tlatelolco, where Aztec ruins, the colonial Church of Santiago Tlatelolco, and modern Mexico City stand side by side. It was to this church that St. Juan Diego was walking for Mass and catechism when Our Lady first appeared to him on the hill of Tepeyac, and here, by tradition, that he was baptized. We celebrate Mass in the brilliantly colored modern Basilica, dedicated in 1976, kneeling before the altar displaying the miraculous Tilma, the sackcloth bearing the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that has been venerated by the faithful for centuries. We also visit the Church of the Hill, the Church of the Well, the Monument of the Offerings, and the Church of the Indians. The afternoon is free to continue exploring the shrine at leisure.

Tlaxcala & Puebla

After breakfast we depart for a full day excursion outside Mexico City. En route we take in the dramatic sight of two magnificent mountain peaks, one snow-capped and the other an active volcano. We arrive first in Tlaxcala to visit the Shrine of San Miguel del Milagro, where St. Michael the Archangel appeared to Diego Lazaro in 1631. We continue to Puebla to visit St. Dominic’s Church and its Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, Baroque masterpieces whose walls and dome are covered in gold leaf and plaster, where we celebrate Mass. We then visit the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, where the incorrupt body of St. Sebastian of Aparicio is venerated. We also visit the Biblioteca Palafoxiana, the oldest public library in the Americas, before enjoying free time to explore Puebla’s charming historic streets, including the famous Candy Street. We gather for dinner in Puebla before returning to our hotel.

Metropolitan Cathedral & Tenochtitlán

This morning we make our way to downtown Mexico City to visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Latin America. We celebrate Mass here and tour its stunning paintings, altarpieces, and statues, including the Tomb of Bishop Zumárraga, the first Bishop of Mexico and a witness to the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our guided tour continues with a visit to the National Palace, the main square known as the Zócalo, and the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlán, known as the Templo Mayor. This evening our chaplain blesses the religious articles we have gathered on pilgrimage.

Tulpetlac & Pyramids of Teotihuacan

After breakfast we visit the church where Blessed Fr. Miguel Pro, S.J. served before his martyrdom under the Calles Regime. We then depart for Tulpetlac to celebrate Mass at Santa Maria Tulpetlac, also known as the Church of the Fifth Apparition of the Blessed Mother and the site of the miraculous healing of St. Juan Diego’s uncle, Juan Bernardino. We have the opportunity to drink from the miraculous well here before journeying to the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, the Place of the Gods, where we visit the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and other remarkable structures, along with a presentation on the Maguey plant. We also pay a return visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This evening we attend an authentic folk performance at the National Palace of Fine Arts. We gather for our farewell dinner tonight.

Questions pilgrims ask

Short answers to what most people want to know before they put down a deposit.

✓How active is this pilgrimage?
Expect about 1 to 2 miles of walking on a typical day, at a moderate pace. The Basilica complex at Tepeyac, the historic centre of Puebla and the site at Teotihuacan all involve uneven ground, cobblestones and some stairs, and the pyramids have a gentle climb that is optional. Mexico City sits at about 7,350 feet, so allow the first day to adjust and drink more water than usual. Two days are full day excursions outside the city.
✓Traveling alone?
You can have a room to yourself for the single room supplement of $375, or share. If you would like to share, tell us when you book and we will do our best to match you with a roommate of the same gender. If we cannot find you a match by the final payment date of July 9, 2027, the single room supplement applies. Couples, families, friends and singles are all welcome, and plenty of pilgrims come on their own.
✓What will I spend beyond the price?
Airfare, which we are glad to quote and book for you, and airport transfers at $150 per person each way if you arrange your own flights. Lunches, which are on your own each afternoon; a typical lunch costs about $15 to $20. Donations at Masses, souvenirs and laundry. Tips for your tour director and bus driver, given at the end of the pilgrimage at your discretion: as a guide, $8 to $10 per person per day for your tour director and $6 to $8 for your driver. Travel insurance if you choose it, and the 3% fee if you pay by credit card, which you avoid by paying with a check, ACH or Zelle. Abroad, we recommend paying for most things by credit card, which is accepted almost everywhere and comes with protection that cash does not; bring a couple of hundred US dollars in cash for emergencies. When a card machine or ATM asks whether to pay in dollars or in the local currency, Mexican pesos, choose the local currency; it is almost always cheaper.
✓What if I need to cancel?
Cancellations must be made in writing. Up to July 9, 2027, everything you have paid is returned except $200. After that date the $450 deposit and any costs we cannot recover are kept. Travel insurance may cover a cancellation depending on the reason, which is why we recommend it.
✓Who is going?
This is an open departure, so pilgrims join individually rather than as one parish group. A Catholic priest travels with us as chaplain for the whole pilgrimage, offering daily Mass, confession and the sacraments, and we announce him as soon as he is confirmed. A Canterbury tour director travels with the group throughout.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Guadalupe jubilee year?+

The Holy Father granted a jubilee year for the fiftieth anniversary of the dedication of the new Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was dedicated in 1976. The jubilee runs from October 12, 2026 to October 12, 2027, and a plenary indulgence is attached to it under the usual conditions. Our pilgrimage falls in its closing week.

Why is the price $1,976?+

Because that is the year the new Basilica was dedicated, the anniversary this jubilee year marks. We set the price to the year.

Is airfare included?+

No, the price covers the land arrangements only. We do sell air, and will quote your flights on request. Your flights should arrive in Mexico City on October 7 and depart on October 12, or on October 16 if you add the Playa del Carmen extension. Book your flights through us and your airport transfers are included; otherwise a private transfer is $150 per person each way.

What is the weather like in October?+

October in Mexico City is mild, usually in the low seventies by day and cooler in the evening, with the rainy season ending. Bring layers, a light rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes. Playa del Carmen is considerably warmer and more humid.

Do I need a passport?+

Yes. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your return date, and passport cards are not accepted for air travel to Mexico. We need your passport details at least 90 days before departure.

Can I add nights in Mexico City?+

Yes. Extra nights before or after the pilgrimage are $250 per room per night at our hotel, subject to availability. Tell us when you book and we will arrange them.

When is the final payment due?+

Final payment is due on July 9, 2027, 90 days before departure. Payment plans are available if you would like to make smaller payments before then.

Should I buy travel insurance?+

We strongly encourage travel insurance for all of our pilgrims, and we partner with Allianz Travel Insurance to offer affordable coverage. Most of our pilgrims choose the Classic Plan. Insurance can be quoted and purchased after registration.

What is a pilgrimage?+

A pilgrimage is not a vacation or excursion but a unique spiritual journey that provides many opportunities to deepen your relationship with God and enrich your Catholic faith by bringing Scripture to life. Pilgrimages offer the opportunity to let Christ draw you near.

More questions are answered in our Support Center, covering booking, payments, travel insurance, passports and what to expect on pilgrimage.

Tlatelolco & Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

We begin this morning at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, where the last battle of the Aztec empire was fought in 1521 and where the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco stands as one of the oldest churches in the Americas. It was here that Juan Diego was baptized and received instruction from Bishop Zumárraga, rooting the story of Guadalupe in the living faith of the indigenous people who first received it. We then make our way to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, where we celebrate Mass in the modern Basilica before the miraculous Tilma of Juan Diego. We also visit the Church of the Hill, the Church of the Well, the Monument of the Offerings, and the Church of the Indians. The afternoon is free for personal prayer at the shrine.

We also visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Latin America, touring its remarkable interior and venerating the Tomb of Bishop Juan de Zumárraga, the first Bishop of Mexico. After lunch we travel to Chalco to visit Girlstown, a mission community run by the Sisters of Mary. Upon arrival, we take a guided tour of the campus before spending time visiting and engaging with the students. We then gather in the Spiritual Center for a buffet dinner, followed by the Rosary in the gymnasium. Church of San José del Altillo & Conchita’s House

This morning we visit the Church of San José del Altillo, a Modernist chapel of remarkable architectural beauty designed in 1958, where the relics of Blessed Conchita Cabrera de Armida rest in the crypt. Conchita, born in 1862 in San Luis Potosí, was a wife, mother of nine children, widow, mystic, and prolific spiritual writer who founded the Apostleship of the Cross and whose interior life left a profound mark on the Mexican Church. Beatified on May 4, 2019 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, she became the first Mexican laywoman to receive that recognition. We celebrate Mass here and spend time in prayer at her tomb. We then tour the house where Conchita lived, gaining an intimate glimpse into the daily life of a woman who pursued holiness in the midst of the ordinary demands of family, widowhood, and the turbulence of Revolutionary Mexico.

Church of the Holy Family & Departure

This morning we visit the Church of the Holy Family, a Jesuit parish in Mexico City and the shrine of Blessed Miguel Pro, the young Jesuit priest who ministered to the faithful in secret during the brutal religious persecution of the Calles regime in the 1920s. Arrested on false charges and executed by firing squad on November 23, 1927, he faced death with his arms outstretched in the form of a cross, crying out “Viva Cristo Rey!” His first-class relics are venerated here, and the church preserves the memory of a martyr whose courage sustained the underground Church through one of the darkest chapters in Mexican Catholic history. We celebrate Mass here before making our way to the airport for our return flight home. With hearts renewed by the witness of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the faith of the Mexican Church, we depart for the United States.

Questions pilgrims ask

Short answers to what most people want to know before they put down a deposit.

✓How active is this pilgrimage?
It is a touring pilgrimage by motorcoach, not a walking one. Expect about 1 to 2 miles of walking on a typical day. Days usually start around 7am, with departure by 9am, and end back at the hotel in the late afternoon, except on February 24, when we stay at Girlstown in Chalco for dinner, the Rosary and an evening Mass. There are stairs up the hill at the Guadalupe shrine, and Mexico City sits at about 7,350 feet, so take it easy on the first day and drink plenty of water.
✓Traveling alone?
You can have a room to yourself, with a single room supplement of $400, or share a room. If you would like to share, we will do our best to match you with a roommate. If we cannot find a match by November 24, 2026, the single room supplement applies. Couples, families, friends and singles are all welcome, and plenty of pilgrims come on their own.
✓What will I spend beyond the price?
Lunches, donations at Masses, souvenirs, laundry and the cost of your passport. A checked bag, since the group airfare includes a carry-on and personal item only. A typical lunch costs about $15 to $20. Tips for your tour director and driver are at your discretion: as a guide, $8 to $10 per person per day for your tour guide and $6 to $8 for your driver. Travel insurance if you choose it, and a 3% fee if you pay by card. Abroad, we recommend paying for most things by credit card, which is accepted almost everywhere and comes with protection that cash does not; bring a couple hundred U.S. dollars in cash for emergencies. Final payment is due on November 24, 2026, 90 days before departure. Payment plans are available if you would like to make smaller payments before then. If you book your own flights, the price is reduced by $500.

Departure & Arrival in Mexico City

Our pilgrimage begins as we depart the United States for our flight to Mexico City. Upon arrival, our Canterbury tour manager will greet us as we collect our bags and accompany us by motorcoach to our hotel. We gather this evening for a welcome dinner to begin our pilgrimage together.

Questions pilgrims ask

Short answers to what most people want to know before they put down a deposit.

✓How active is this pilgrimage?
It is a touring pilgrimage by motorcoach for the first five days, then three free days at the beach resort. Expect about 1 to 2 miles of walking on a typical touring day, across the shrine grounds at Tepeyac, on cobblestone streets in Puebla and the historic center, and across the archaeological site at Teotihuacan. Mexico City sits at about 7,350 feet, so take the first day gently and drink plenty of water.
✓Traveling alone?
You can have a room to yourself, with a single room supplement of $1,299, or share a room. If you would like to share, we will do our best to match you with a roommate. If we cannot find a match by the final payment date, 90 days before departure, the single room supplement applies. Couples, families, friends and singles are all welcome, and plenty of pilgrims come on their own.
✓What will I spend beyond the price?
Checked bag fees, donations at Masses, souvenirs and laundry. Lunch is included on touring days in Mexico City, and all meals, drinks and snacks are included at the resort. Tips for hotel, restaurant and luggage staff are included; tips for your guides and drivers are at your discretion: as a guide, $8 to $10 per person per day for your tour guide and $6 to $8 for your driver. Travel insurance if you choose it, and a 3% fee if you pay by card. Abroad, we recommend paying for most things by credit card, which is accepted almost everywhere and comes with protection that cash does not; bring a couple hundred U.S. dollars in cash for emergencies. When a card machine or ATM asks whether to pay in dollars or in the local currency (pesos in Mexico), choose the local currency; it is almost always cheaper.
✓What if I need to cancel?
Cancel in writing. Up to 90 days before departure, everything you have paid is returned except $200. Your final payment, due 90 days before departure, is non-refundable once paid. Travel insurance may cover a cancellation, depending on the reason.
✓Who is going?
Fr. Ivan Ramirez, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Bristol, Connecticut, leads the group from his parish.

Frequently asked questions

Is there Mass every day?+

Yes, in Mexico City. Mass is celebrated each day of the pilgrimage portion, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Puebla, at the Metropolitan Cathedral and at Tulpetlac. Days 7 to 9 at the resort are free, with no scheduled touring.

When are the dates?+

The pilgrimage is planned for June 2027, and the exact dates are being confirmed. Call us on +1 (800) 653-0017 and we will tell you the moment they are set.

How much walking should I expect?+

This is not a walking pilgrimage, but expect to be on your feet for a few hours each day at the shrines, on cobblestone streets in Puebla and the historic center, and across the archaeological site at Teotihuacan. Mexico City sits at about 7,350 feet, so take the first day gently and drink plenty of water.

How do hotel rooms work?+

Rates are per person based on two pilgrims sharing a room. If you are traveling alone we will do our best to match you with a roommate; if we cannot find you a match by the final payment date, the single room supplement will apply. We stay at one hotel in Mexico City for five nights and one all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen for four.

Do I need a passport?+

Yes. US citizens need a valid passport to travel to Mexico. No visa is needed for a tourist visit. We confirm the current entry requirements with every pilgrim before departure.

Can I book my own flights?+

Yes. Group flights from New York JFK or Boston are included in the price, and you can choose the ground-only rate and book your own flights instead. Tell us at registration so we can match your arrival to the group in Mexico City and your departure from Cancún.

Pilgrimages offer the opportunity to let Christ draw you near, and your chaplain is there to guide you spiritually on the journey.
