Canterbury’s scheduled pilgrimages to Mexico City and the Basilica. Whatever is open for booking appears here, and any group can travel on its own dates during the jubilee year.
On 12 October 1976 the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, on the tilma of St. Juan Diego, was moved into the new Basilica at Tepeyac. For the fiftieth anniversary, Pope Leo XIV has granted a jubilee year at the Basilica, from 12 October 2026 to 12 October 2027, at the request of Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Archbishop of Mexico.
Through the Apostolic Penitentiary, a plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who visit the Basilica with devotion and take part in a liturgy or spend time in prayer there, under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. It may be applied to oneself or to the souls in Purgatory.
Every Canterbury itinerary in Mexico City gives the group unhurried time at the Basilica for Mass and prayer. A group with its own priest celebrates Mass there; a group without one attends a public Mass, usually in Spanish, and the same for confession.
