Pilgrimage Itinerary

Fátima, Castles & the Camino with Chris Stefanick

Day 1: Wednesday, June 10, 2026 – Departure from the USA

Our pilgrimage begins as we depart for our overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal. Meals will be served during the flight. (D)

Day 2: Thursday, June 11, 2026 – Arrival in Lisbon

Upon arrival at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport, our local professional tour escort will greet us and accompany us by motorcoach to our hotel. After check-in, we gather this evening for a welcome dinner to begin our pilgrimage together. Overnight Lisbon. (D)

Day 3: Friday, June 12, 2026 – Sintra, St. Anthony’s & Lisbon

This morning we journey to Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage town, to visit the historic Moorish Castle, built during the 8th and 9th centuries, its ramparts offering sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. We then have time to explore Sintra’s charming town center before returning to Lisbon. Our pilgrimage opens in prayer and Mass at the Church of St. Anthony of Lisbon, built on the site where the beloved Doctor of the Church was born in 1195. This evening we gather for dinner at a local seafood restaurant, one of Lisbon’s great culinary traditions. Overnight Lisbon. (B/L/D)

Day 4: Saturday, June 13, 2026 – Lisbon, Santarém, Óbidos & Fátima

After breakfast, our first stop is the Lisbon Cathedral, the Sé, the oldest church in the city dating to 1147. We then travel north to Santarém to venerate one of the most significant Eucharistic miracles in the history of the Church, a consecrated host that began to bleed in the 13th century and has been venerated at the Church of St. Stephen ever since. We continue to the beautifully preserved medieval walled city of Óbidos before arriving in Fátima, where after dinner we join the faithful for the nightly Candlelight Rosary Procession. Dinner and overnight in Fátima. (B/L/D)

Day 5: Sunday, June 14, 2026 – Fátima, Apparitions & Way of the Cross

Today is devoted entirely to Fátima, where Our Lady appeared six times to three shepherd children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, between May and October of 1917. We begin with Mass at the Capelinha das Aparições, built on the very spot where Our Lady appeared. We then visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the tombs of St. Jacinta, St. Francisco, and Sr. Lúcia invite quiet prayer. Continuing to the Igreja Matriz de Fátima, we visit the parish church where the three shepherd children were baptized. The afternoon takes us along the Way of the Cross through Aljustrel, Valinhos, and Loca do Cabeço, the sites of the apparitions and the appearances of the Angel of Peace. This evening we join once more in the Candlelight Procession. Dinner and overnight in Fátima. (B/L/D)

Day 6: Monday, June 15, 2026 – Fátima, Alcobaça & Nazaré

After breakfast, we depart for the Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Gothic church in Portugal, founded in 1153 by King Afonso Henriques. We tour the church and cloisters, visiting the Royal Pantheon and the elaborately carved tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, among the finest Gothic funerary sculptures in Europe. The monastery also bears a close connection to St. Elizabeth of Portugal, the 13th-century queen renowned for her charity and devotion to the poor. We celebrate Mass here before continuing to the coastal town of Nazaré, ascending to the Sítio viewpoint to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, one of the oldest Marian shrines on the Iberian Peninsula. The afternoon is free to enjoy the dramatic Atlantic coastline and lunch at leisure before we return to Fátima for dinner and our final Candlelight Procession at the shrine. Dinner and overnight in Fátima. (B/L/D)

Day 7: Tuesday, June 16, 2026 – Fátima & Porto

Following breakfast, we make our way north to Porto, Portugal’s second city, set along the banks of the Douro River. We visit the Porto Cathedral, one of the oldest monuments in the city, its construction begun in the 12th century, its cloisters lined with magnificent azulejo tile panels. Nearby, the Church of São Francisco is renowned for one of the most ornate gilded interiors in all of Portugal, its Baroque woodwork considered among the finest of its kind in the country. The afternoon is free to explore the Ribeira riverfront, Porto’s UNESCO-listed historic quarter, at your own pace. Dinner and overnight in Porto. (B/L/D)

Day 8: Wednesday, June 17, 2026 – Camino Walk & Ponte de Lima

We rise early this morning and depart by motorcoach to Vitorino dos Piães, a quiet village nestled among the vineyards of northern Portugal, where we set out on foot along the Camino Português, the Portuguese route of the ancient pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela. Guided by the iconic yellow arrows and scallop shell markers that have directed pilgrims for centuries, our walk of approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) takes us through quiet countryside chapels, rolling vineyards, and ancient stone paths as we make our way north into Ponte de Lima, Portugal’s oldest municipality, first chartered in 1125. At a wayside chapel along the route, we pause to celebrate Mass together, joining our prayer to the countless pilgrims who have walked this same road for centuries. For those who prefer not to walk, the day may be spent at leisure in Porto or with time to explore Ponte de Lima. Upon arrival, the group gathers at the medieval Roman bridge spanning the Lima River before enjoying free time to explore the town’s historic center, gardens, and riverfront. Our motorcoach returns us to Porto, where we gather this evening for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Porto. (B/L/D)

Day 9: Thursday, June 18, 2026 – Porto, Coimbra & Lisbon

Departing Porto, we travel south to Coimbra, home to the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, where the incorrupt remains of St. Elizabeth of Portugal rest in a silver and gold casket above the main altar. St. Elizabeth, Queen of Portugal and a great-niece of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, was renowned throughout her kingdom as a peacemaker and tireless servant of the poor, canonized in 1626. We celebrate Mass here before continuing south to Lisbon for hotel check-in and our Farewell Dinner together. Dinner and overnight in Lisbon. (B/L/D)

Day 10: Friday, June 19, 2026 – Departure

With hearts renewed by the grace of pilgrimage and the intercession of Our Lady of Fátima, we transfer to Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport for our return flight home. (B)

OPTIONAL LOURDES POST TOUR WITH CHRIS!

Please note that post tour participants will depart Porto on Day 9 and will not visit Coimbra.

Day 9: Thursday, June 18, 2026 – Porto & Lourdes

After breakfast, we depart Porto for our flight to Toulouse, France. Upon arrival, we transfer by motorcoach through the rolling countryside of southern France to Lourdes, one of the most significant Marian pilgrimage sites in the world. After hotel check-in, we join pilgrims gathered from every corner of the globe for the evening Candlelight Marian Procession, a moving expression of faith and devotion to Our Lady that has taken place here nightly for over a century. Dinner and overnight in Lourdes. (B/L/D)

Day 10: Friday, June 19, 2026 – Lourdes

Our day begins with Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, followed by a guided visit of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. We visit the Grotto of Massabielle, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared eighteen times to St. Bernadette Soubirous beginning on February 11, 1858, and we have the opportunity to participate in the Water Gesture, a powerful act of faith recalling the miraculous healing waters that have drawn the sick and suffering to Lourdes for over 160 years. We then walk in the footsteps of St. Bernadette, visiting her birthplace at the Boly Mill and the Cachot, the small former jail cell where her impoverished family lived at the time of the apparitions. The afternoon is free for personal prayer, quiet devotion, or time at the Grotto. This evening we gather once more for the Candlelight Marian Procession before dinner. Dinner and overnight in Lourdes. (B/L/D)

Day 11: Saturday, June 20, 2026 – Return Home

Following breakfast, we transfer by motorcoach to Toulouse Airport for our return flight home, carrying with us the spiritual graces of this pilgrimage and the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes. (B)

What is group airfare?

We work with airlines on booking group airfare from anticipated departure airports. This allows us to get the best rates to fly you and the rest of the group to and from your destination. Group air contracts do not allow deviations, date changes, or upgrades, and in some cases issuing tickets at individual rates may be necessary. See “special flight/hotel requests section” below.

Select your preferred departure airport during registration. If you don’t see your preferred airport listed, please select “send me a flight quote.”

Can I book my own flights?

You are always welcome to arrange your own flights. Arranging airfare on your own gives you the ability to spend personally-earned airline miles for your ticket, handpick your seats, upgrade directly with the airline, or deviate from the group in other ways.

If you choose to book your own flights, please see the following guidelines in regard to timing your flights:

Pilgrimage Arrival – For the arrival into Lisbon on the 20th, a group motorcoach transfer will be available at approximately 9am. If you arrive prior to this, you are welcome to join this motor coach transfer to the hotel. Please let us know if you intend to join this transfer. Hotel check-in begins between 2pm and 3pm and a welcome dinner will follow in the evening.

For those whose flights land after this transfer departs from the airport, we are happy to arrange a private transfer for you. Private transfers cost $150 (2 passengers).  Otherwise, there are numerous Taxi and Uber options available, and you are welcome to simply meet the group at the hotel.

Pilgrimage Departure – Please schedule your departure flight from Toulouse Airport for 11:00 AM or later on the 20th. A complimentary motorcoach transfer will be provided that day, arriving at the airport in time for flights departing at or after 11:00 AM.

If your flight departs before 11:00 AM, you will need to arrange a private transfer. As the hotel is located several hours from the airport, private transfers cost approximately $600 per vehicle. For this reason, we strongly recommend booking a flight departing at 11:00 AM or later.

How does airport transportation work on arrival and departure?

Arrival: If you choose to book airfare with us, you will be greeted in the destination airport’s arrival hall by a Canterbury Pilgrimages representative and transferred to the first stop on the itinerary, typically your hotel.

Departure: If you choose to book airfare with us, you will be transferred from the last stop on your itinerary, typically your hotel, to the airport for your return flight home.

If you book your own flights: You may book arrival and departure transfers through us for an additional cost. You may also choose to arrange your own means of transportation to and from the airport. In most cases, on arrival, the first stop on the itinerary will be the group’s hotel, but we will provide you with the location if the group is meeting elsewhere on this day.

Can I apply TSA PreCheck or Global Entry?

If you have booked airfare through us and would like to apply your Known Traveler Number (for TSA PreCheck) and/or your CBP PASSID (for Global Entry), you may provide it to us during registration. Forgot your KTN? Retrieve it here: https://tsaenrollmentbyidemia.tsa.dhs.gov/ktn-lookup

Can I use frequent flyer miles or airline vouchers?

We cannot book your airfare using earned frequent flyer miles or airline vouchers. However, if the airfare we book for you coincides with an airline you are a member of, we are happy to apply your frequent flyer # to your booking for any mile accrual (if applicable).

Can I upgrade my flights and/or depart earlier/return later than the group?

Absolutely. If you would like to arrive earlier/depart later than the group and/or upgrade your airfare, please contact us at hello@canterburypilgrimages.com

When will I receive my flight schedule?

The group’s flight schedules will be provided to you digitally and in the mail 30 days before the pilgrimage.

Know Before You Book

What is a pilgrimage?

What is a pilgrimage?

We would like to remind you that a pilgrimage is not a vacation or excursion but rather a unique spiritual journey that will provide many opportunities to deepen your relationship with God and enrich your Catholic faith by bringing Scripture to life. Millions throughout the ages have gone before you searching for a way to physically connect with their faith in Christ Jesus. You may find that when you are near a saint’s tomb, viewing a holy relic, or praying a Marian devotion, you are overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit in a very real sense. Pilgrimages offer the opportunity to let Christ draw you near. Your chaplain is there to help guide you spiritually on this journey.

Walking expectations

This active program covers a good amount of ground each day. The days are busy, usually starting with a wake-up call around 7AM and departure by 9AM or earlier. We aim to be back at the hotel between 5PM and 6PM. Times may vary depending on destination and program. We encourage all pilgrims to be able to walk 3-4 miles per day. The pace is moderate, however you will encounter some uneven surfaces, stairs, steps, cobblestones, and significant slopes. Some tours require walking in the open air with no shade and no seating available. For more specifics on this itinerary’s physical landscape, please reach out to us.

Pilgrimage Timeline with Canterbury

Today! Registration

Upon depositing for your trip, we would like to get to know a little bit about you. We will collect your basic contact information, passport information, emergency contact information, and how you would like to set up your pilgrimage. How many are in your party? Will you travel with them and/or share a room with them? Do you know anyone else attending? Where are you flying from?

After Registration

You will receive additional information that will help you start preparing for your pilgrimage. If applicable, we will also begin working on your flight and travel requests.

90 days – Payment deadline

Full payment is due for your trip 90 days prior to your departure. This also serves as the last day to sign up for the pilgrimage if space is still available. Once within the 90-day deadline, we may be able to accommodate you at a different rate.

30 days – Pilgrim travel kit mailed

Your pilgrim travel kit includes an invite to download our travel app. On the app is where you will find your flight itinerary (if you opt for us to book your flights), trip itinerary, and a map of your hotel accommodations. You will also have the ability to share photos and messages with fellow pilgrims, and receive any important flight and schedule updates before and during your pilgrimage. Also included in the pilgrim travel kit is your name badge, a luggage tag, a Magnificat prayer book, and a copy of the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, which inspired our mission.

Your pilgrim travel kit will either be delivered to your mailing address provided, or to your parish if a pre-departure meeting is arranged. Please note, we ship via FedEx 2-day air, and thus cannot deliver to P.O. boxes.

Departure Day

The day has arrived! We are looking forward to meeting you.

Upon Return

After the pilgrimage experience, we would love to hear from you what went well and what we can improve upon. We kindly ask you to respond to the survey in your inbox within 5 days of return while your new memories are still fresh.

Time to book your next pilgrimage!

See all of our current pilgrimage offerings here!

Hotel Accommodations

Single Rooms

Solo travelers are always welcome on our pilgrimages. If you wish to have a hotel accommodation to yourself, you will be responsible for the single room fee (commonly referred to as a single supplement.)

Shared Rooms

Sharing hotel accommodations is a great way to save money and get to know another solo traveler on the pilgrimage. If you wish to share a room, we will attempt to connect you with another person of the same gender on the pilgrimage looking to share. Shared rooms are always double rooms with 2 beds. Should we not be able to accommodate you with a roommate, you will be responsible for the single room fee.

Double Rooms

For pilgrims traveling with a companion, double rooms are available in either 1 or 2 bed configurations.

Triple & Quad Rooms

For pilgrims traveling in parties of 3 or 4, please be aware that while we do our best to accommodate, not all hotels have rooms equipped with 3 or 4 beds. In many cases, the 3rd or 4th bed is a cot or convertible sofa bed.

Bed Sizes

Europe: 1 queen bed or 2 twin beds

Asia: 1 twin bed or 2 twin beds

USA: 1 king bed or 2 queen beds

Passports & Visas

Passports

  • A valid passport is required to travel outside of the United States.
  • Your passport must be valid 6 months from the trip return date.
  • If your passport will be expiring within the 6 month window, it is important to renew your passport in a timely manner as renewal turnarounds can take several weeks to months.
  • Passport cards are NOT acceptable for travel internationally; only passport books.
  • We will need your passport information at least 90 days prior to departure. You may provide us with your passport information upon registering if it is valid and up to date.
  • All airlines and hotels require us to submit your passport information including full name, date of birth, gender, country, and passport expiration date.

Although we will do our best to notify you if your passport will not be valid for travel, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure your passport is valid.

Travel Visas

Depending on the nationality of your passport, a travel visa may be required to reach your destination. Although we will do our best to notify you if a travel visa is required, it is ultimately your responsibility to check if visas are required for the destinations visited and to obtain any necessary travel documents. You can do that easily here: https://apply.joinsherpa.com/travel-restrictions

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance

  • We strongly encourage travel insurance for all of our pilgrims. We partner with Allianz Travel Insurance to offer affordable travel insurance.
  • Most of our pilgrims choose the Classic Plan to protect their travel investment. Learn more about this plan by clicking here.
  • Insurance can be quoted and purchased after registration. With any questions, or if you would like to include insurance for airfare or accommodations that you did not purchase through Canterbury, please contact us for assistance.
  • By purchasing a policy through us, please note that the service we provide is only in the acquisition and management of your policy. In the case of postponement or cancellation of your pilgrimage, we will request the necessary updates to your policy to reflect your new dates of travel, or request the cancellation and refund of your insurance policy if applicable (refunds are subject to Allianz’s discretion). Any claims filed are the responsibility of the customer.
Accessibility

In the air

Although group airfare is restrictive with seat selection, we will always do what we can to accommodate pilgrims who need specific seating, such as aisle or bulkhead seating, due to a medical condition or disability. In addition to that, wheelchair assistance from the moment you arrive at the airport, to your terminal, or all the way to your seat, is available to you, provided by the airline, and does not need to be pre-arranged.

On the ground

Most countries do not follow US accessibility standards. Old buildings, cobblestone walkways, and uneven surfaces are a part of every itinerary. Access to some establishments may not be convenient for wheelchair use and will require the use of stairs. During hotel overnights, we can arrange for you to stay in handicap-accessible rooms where available. In the event they are not available, we will request rooms on the main floor or near an elevator.

Can I request a wheelchair?

Pending availability, we are happy to request a wheelchair rental for the duration of the pilgrimage. Wheelchair users must have a designated travel companion to assist them during the pilgrimage. Please reach out to us to place this request.

Postponements & Cancellations

Postponement

We always intend to provide our customers with the pilgrimage they spend time and resources to plan with us. If we are unable to travel to a destination ahead of a trip, or reasonably predict to be unable to travel, Canterbury reserves the right to make changes to the itinerary, including the dates of the trip. We respect your time and that of the people in your life who plan for your absence. We only change or postpone the dates of the trip when it is necessary due to inability to travel to a destination, untimely closures in crucial sites along the itinerary, extreme weather conditions, government mandates, war, acts of God, or other factors. In this situation, your reservation will be automatically preserved for the new dates of the trip, which will take place at a reasonable time arranged by Canterbury and/or the group organizer. Additionally, Canterbury hopes to offer you the best possible options for your reservation given the circumstances, which, if possible, could include transferring your reservation to another trip, or other arrangements.

Cancellation

Countless months get put into the organization of your trip, thus we do our best to avoid cancelling it. Though we reserve the right to cancel for any reason at any time, we typically only do in instances of an insufficient group size. In this case, we would refund 100% of what you have paid to us back to your original payment method on file within 10 business days.
