Advent in the cathedral squares of Central Europe
Vienna, Salzburg, Prague, Budapest, Kraków and the Danube
The markets of Central Europe grew up in the squares in front of the cathedrals, and that is where these routes spend their time. Daily Mass is arranged in advance at the churches along the way, the same way we arrange it for every group, and the markets fill the evenings.
Most Christkindlmarkt markets open in mid to late November and close by Christmas Eve, so these routes travel inside a window of about four weeks. Groups that want the first or second week of Advent should ask early, because hotels in Vienna, Salzburg and Kraków fill for the season.
Every route is built on its shrines: Mariazell, Melk Abbey, the Infant Jesus of Prague, St. Stephen of Hungary in Budapest, Jasna Góra and the Divine Mercy shrine in Kraków. The markets are what the season adds to them.
