We suggest carrying a couple of hundred US dollars as emergency cash, along with enough local currency to cover tips for your guides and drivers. For everything else, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere you’ll be traveling, and a card is our recommended way to pay. It’s worth letting your card provider know you’ll be traveling before you go, so that a foreign transaction doesn’t get declined while you’re away. Seating on our group flights is assigned by the airline rather than by us, so we aren’t able to reserve particular seats in advance. What we do recommend is speaking with the desk attendant when you check in, who can advise on preferred seating arrangements. That’s also the best moment to ask about being seated with your travel companion. Cancel Anytime is part of our Classic with Cancel Anytime plan from Allianz. It lets you cancel for almost any unexpected reason that isn’t already covered by the policy, and reimburses up to 80% of your trip cost. Two things are important to know before you rely on it. First, the plan has to be purchased within 14 days of your initial deposit and can’t be added after that, so if it appeals to you it’s worth sorting out early (see “When should I buy travel insurance?”). Second, it isn’t available to residents of New York or Washington; if you live in either state, our Classic and Basic plans are still available to you.
