Bring a passport that is valid for at least six months after the day you return home (see the rules by country), any required visa or ETA documentation, and confirmation of your travel insurance if you purchased it. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after the day you return home. That one rule covers every country Canterbury travels to.

Some countries ask for less. Most of Europe requires three months beyond the day you leave the Schengen area, and your passport must also have been issued within the last ten years. Others, including Egypt, Jordan, India, Turkey and Vietnam, require six months. Airlines check these rules at the check-in counter and can refuse to board you, so six months keeps you clear everywhere.

Make sure you also have at least two blank pages. If your passport expires within six months of your return, renew it before you travel, and allow several weeks for the renewal.
